Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching & Learning in Schools

(Known as the Teaching Assistant Course)

Introduction

This qualification is for those members of the school workforce who directly support teaching and learning of pupils in schools in an area that requires specialist knowledge and skills. This is a competence based qualification so there is a requirement for assessment in a real work environment. Learners must therefore have a placement (or employment) in a school environment.

Programme Content

The Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools is comprised of the following eleven mandatory units:

  • Understand child and young person development
  • Understand how to safeguard children and young people
  • Support children and young people’s health & safety
  • Engage in personal development of health, social care in children and young people’s settings
  • Support learning activities
  • Promote children and young people’s positive behaviour
  • Develop professional relationship with children, young people and adults
  • Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
  • Support assessment for learning
  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Schools as organisations

Entry Requirements

This qualification is designed for learners aged 16 and above who are working in a school environment.

There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this qualification. However, learners may find it helpful if they’ve already achieved a Level 2 qualification.

Duration: 12 to 18 months

These programmes are free to anyone who meets the following criteria:

  • Not in full time education
  • Has lived in EU for 3 years or more
  • Age must be 16 and above
  • Employed in a school environment
